Days 127-130: 3/24-27/24 - A looooonng travel day, and our first Sakura in Yokohama!

3/24-25

We had thought that the travel to Australia was brutal, but the travel from New Zealand to Japan was unending. I remember thinking that we had nailed our route layout, but New Zealand is close to nothing.

Some highlights of our 3 flight, one train, 44 hour travel days:

Upon arrival in Japan we were more than slightly overwhelmed with the train system at Narita airport. There are Suica cards you can get to pay for transit, but some longer trains are run by different companies and require a seat reservation and ticket separately, part of which you can buy with the Suica, but you have to load the Suica with a good amount of cash, and we were overloaded tired. Eventually we got tickets (opting to postpone Suica card acquisition, which may have been a mistake) to a station close to our hotel, a taxi the final leg (the next day we would see a quick second train would’ve been fine). After a quick shower we headed out for a sushi dinner and slept quite well.

Totally with it and definitely intentionally ordering the alcohol free beer.

22 hours in and going strong!

33 hours in and the tired has reached our eyes!

3/26-27

Our first day in Japan we didn’t do much. We had lofty aspirations for hitting the ground running, but the nearly two days of travel and gray, rainy day lead much better to resting and reading. We did venture out to acquire Suica cards (which we couldn’t due to a chip shortage), and dinner with Paul and Erin who were coming up from Osaka. The food was delicious, and we never received as positive feedback for using the local language as when we used one of the 5 Japanese words we had learned to thank them for the meal as we left.

The rain abated and we explored the Yokohama area. Before we left, we were treated to a (seemingly rare) sight of Mount Fuji! The Ooka river walk was pretty if slightly bereft of the expected cherry blossoms (sakura) that drew us to Japan at that time. We made our way to the Yokohama Chinatown and enjoyed street snacks while wandering among ornate gates, busy streets, and a pretty waterfront.

Frankly, Japan is an introvert's dream

Our first morning in Japan and we couldn't see anything out our windows...

Our second morning in Japan and we witness a miracle! A spectacular view of Mount Fuji! (Taken from the same window!)

Unfortunately, these were the only cherry blossoms we saw on the Ooka River Walk, as the blossoms were a little late this year.

We suspect there were many cherry blossoms along this Cherry Blossom Promenade just a few days later

Yokohama's Chinatown!

Not only are you supposed to keep quiet on the elevators but also the public transportation!

The most beautiful perm a poodle has ever had!
