Days 22+23: 12/10-11/23 - Down days and some art
12/10/23
Our first, and I'm certain not our last, "down day" of the trip. We luxuriated in our 27th-floor suite (I will include it was $46 dollars a night, because without it, that sentence makes me cringe). Reading, catching up on some budget and blog stuff, staying close for lunch, and enjoying another amazing south-Indian meal in Malaysia. After returning with more groceries (our initial purchase of bagels and lox was perilously close to being finished after just one day), we took full advantage of the in-unit washer drier and planned some spots to see the rest of the week.
Yes, Indian food in Malaysia IS in fact that good.
Corner stores hold more than you would know if you care to dig in the back.

Our previous lazy day continued into the morning, as we once again enjoyed the view from our 27th floor rooms over persimmons and bagels. Determined to explore the city more, we braved the long elevator wait and ride and brief walk to nearby Blue Boy Vegetarian food center. Nourished, and having perfectly timed our walk for peak heat, we wandered Jalan Masjid India and the surrounding area, basking in overflowing AC from the myriad jewelry stores peppered among the clothing stores that dominated the street. Declaring defeat in the face of the heat, we retreated to a local grocery store for AC and ice cream before catching a Grab to the Islamic Arts Museum. Beautiful scale models of mosques present and ancient, numerous Korans with intricate calligraphy, and rooms of ceremonial garb and weapons made for an interesting afternoon of placing Islam in the history of Malaysia and the surrounding countries. By the time we left the museum, dark clouds covered half the sky. Minutes into our walk home, we decided to backtrack and call a Grab. Minutes after that, our nearly-early-enough reroute was rewarded by a torrential downpour. Huddling under a kind street vendor's tent outside the National Mosque saved us the brunt of the deluge, but even the 10 second walk to the Grab soaked us thoroughly. Dinner from a venue close enough to reach without stepping out from an overhang rounded out our second full day in Kuala Lumpur.
The torrential rainstorm, and a corner of the National Mosque (at left)!
Kaia expresses exasperation at yet another Malaysian museum with no Malaysian ceramics. WHERE ARE THE MALAYSIAN CERAMICS?!?!?!
Jalan Masjid India! ...in peak heat...

Did you know that most museums' temperature and humidity monitors have no security and can be accessed by anyone that has worked with them? Anyway, you wouldn't BELIEVE how high the RH% was in these cases.
